Members of the Lab

Alessandro Vietti

PhD in theoretical linguistics and in sociolinguistics at the University of Pavia. His research interests include quantitative analysis of natural speech, with the aim of understanding phonetic variation and its implications for linguistic theory; combining experimental methods with advanced quantitative analysis to model speech production and perception. After taking a tenured researcher position at the Free University of Bolzano he set up a laboratory of phonetics and specialized in the ultrasound tongue imaging technique.


Lorenzo Spreafico

Associate Professor, University of Bozen-Bolzano. PhD in Linguistics at the University of Pavia in the framework of an international agreement with the universities Freie Universität Berlin and Universität Erfurt. Since September 2021 Associate professor of language education at the Faculty of education, Free University of Bolzano-Bozen. His current research interests include language acquisition and teaching, with special emphasis on pronunciation.


Loredana Schettino

Researcher (RTD-A), Free Univeristy of Bozen-Bolzano. PhD in Linguistics at the University of Salerno (2022), visiting researcher at the University of Bielefeld (2020), Post-doc researcher at the University of Naples Federico II (2022-2023). My research interests include the communicative value of linguistic phenomena that characterize natural speech such as disfluencies and phonetic variation with a focus on integrating linguistic and phonetic knowledge into speech technologies.

Andrea Brugnoli

Post-Doc Researcher at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. PhD in Linguistics at the University of Verona in joint agreement with the University of Marburg (2024). My research interests include the phonology and phonetics of Italian and German, specifically with regard to word stress and syllable weight. More recently, I have been working on the description and analysis of the Sardinian vowel system, with a particular focus on diphthongs.

Domenico De Cristofaro

PhD Student, Free Univeristy of Bozen-Bolzano. My research focuses on low-resource languages and dialects (such as Tyrolean), with an emphasis on interpretability of speech foundation models to enable more effective and guided fine-tuning.
